(Doktor Alm. Arzt (m), Fr. Medecin docteur (m), İng. Doctor, physician. Doktor, Latince öğretmen demektir. Bin yıl önce, ilk 

üniversitelerin ortaya çıkmasıyla birlikte, akademik bir ünvan olarak kullanılmıştır. Günümüzde, 

doktora sahibi olan kişilere verilmekle birlikte, genellikle Tıp Doktoru anlamında kullanılır ve kişilerin adlarından önce gelen Dr. kısaltmasıyla belirtilir.

 

Doktor ünvanı, ilk olarak Avrupa'da ortaya çıkmış ve zamanla Amerika'ya ve diğer Avrupa sömürgelerine de yayılmıştır. 

 

 

Türkiye'de doktorlar 6 yıllık üniversite eğitimi görürler ve mezun olduklarında pratisyen hekim olurlar, reçete yazma ve hastanelerde çalışma iznine sahip olurlar. Belirli bir alanda uzmanlaşmak isteyenler, 

Tıpta Uzmanlık Sınavı'na (TUS) girerler.

 

1. Tedavi sanatlarında pratisyen, tıp fakültesi, dişçilik ve veterinerlik bölümlerinden derece alıp devlet tarafından uygulama (hekimlik) yapabilmek için lisans almış kişi. Hekim, kişilerde hastalık çıkmasını veya birinden diğerine geçmesini önlemeye yarayan bilgilerin uygulama alanına konması ve bunun için gerekli yeni metot ve usulleri araştırır. Nüfus tesbiti, periyodik muayeneler, bulaşıcı hastalıkların kontrolü, çevre sağlığının düzeltilmesi, beslenme durumunun iyileştirilmesi, dejeneratif (yıkıcı) hastalıklarda erken teşhis ve koruma, iş ve meslek sağlığı çalışmaları, kazalarla ilgili çalışmalar, yaşlı bakım çalışmaları, rehabilitasyon çalışmaları ve bu hizmetlerin istatistiki değerlendirilmeleri hekimin başlıca görevleri arasındadır. 2. Belli bir öğrenim dalında uzman olarak nitelenen en yüksek diploma ünvanına sahip kişi. Tıbbiye dışında doktor ünvanı, Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin ilk kuruluş yıllarında yabancı öğretim üyelerinin etkisiyle girmiştir. Üniversite öğretim üyesi sıfatını kazanabilmek için başlangıçta doktora yapmak mecburiyeti yokken, daha sonra 4936 sayı ve 13-6-1946 tarihli üniversiteler kanununun 18/a maddesince mecburi olmuştur (Edebiyat doktorluğu, fen doktorluğu, ilahiyat doktorluğu buna misaldir).

 

Bu öğrenim dallarında bu ünvana sahib olabilmek için o dalda doktora vermek gereklidir.

 

Doktora; fakülte ve yüksek okullarca tertiplenen, değişik yönetmeliklere tabi bir tez hazırlanmasıdır. Mastır tezini yapmış ve imtihanını vermiş doktora adayı, yabancı dil ve meslek sahasından imtihana girer. Yönetici hocanın gösterdiği seminer ve doktora derslerine katılır. Başarılı olduğu takdirde tez konusunu alır ve çalışmaya başlar. Çalışmasını bitirince, ihtisas tezini görüşülmek üzere jüri heyetine sunar. Jüri heyetince tez incelenir sonra kabul edilirse doktor adayı jüri önünde sözlü imtihana tabi tutulur. İmtihanı başardığı takdirde doktor ünvanını almaya hak kazanır. )
